Run. Fast.

Image
The heat has really affected my pace this summer, which I suppose goes for everyone else, really. When I started running, I just hoped to make it to a 10 minute/mile pace. I got there this past winter. Not for every run, but I did it a few times. And my big goal was to run a sub 30-minute 5k. And I did in December. This summer, though, I've mostly been running at an 11 or 12 minute/mile pace, which has been disappointing. I think I made it to 10'30" once. Anyway, today I thought I would see if I could run a sub 30-minute 5k. I wondered how I could do if I did run in a race. And the weather was perfect. It was 75 and overcast. I ran as hard as I could, and my watch said my pace was about 9'08" about the whole time, which would have put me under thirty minutes. In the last mile, I was so beat. I felt nauseous and crampy. I had to count to 20 over and over just to finish the last half mile. I made it, though. In the end (despite what my watch said), I ran a 9'4...

Second Thoughts

I just wrote out all my hopes to train for a half and I'm already feeling discouraged. I ran six miles on Sunday at an OK pace. I felt fine. Nothing hurt, really, except for my hip for just a couple of minutes. Then Monday was a rest day. Monday night and this morning, though, my knees were feeling it a little. I ran this morning and made it fine. I know I'm OK now, but I can't help from worrying about adding more mileage. Is it too much too fast? Will I inevitably injury myself? Maybe I just can't run that far this quickly. Maybe I need longer to train. Or maybe I just can't run that far without hurting myself at all . Le sigh. There is another half in the Outer Banks at the beginning of November. Maybe another month would do the trick. This morning, it was nice and cool. It was 69 degrees. Chris stayed up really late working, so I tried to let him sleep in and took the boys in the jogger. It slowed me down some, so I didn't have as good of a pace as I woul...

Summer Running and a Half Marathon Plan

It has been another good month of running and we finally got a little break from the heat! Instead of running at 6:00 am to beat the 100-degree days, I've been able to run early morning and enjoy 80 degrees. It's been nice. In June, I ran 53 miles, which is the most I have ever run in a month. Even when I ran my 10-mile run back in January, that month was still just about 47 miles, I think. The month of July is going pretty well also. And though I'm really happy with how I am doing, I can't help but hope to run a half marathon still. Maybe it's a stupid goal to continually return to when I'm doing fine as it is. Maybe I really should just focus on what works for me, but it seems like a big accomplishment that I had hoped to tackle before 30. And, well, I am turning 29 in 10 days. The Crawlin' Crab half is coming up at the beginning of October. I have mentioned it to Chris and keep going back and forth. When he runs more than 10 miles, his knees start h...

Long Time Without Updates

If you didn't know me (or look at my Instagram), you might think from the lack of updates that I haven't been running. You might think that I teetered off and that my new healthy "habits" had died off. I'm glad to say that isn't the case. I just stopped updating because it all felt silly to write about running. I kept running and working toward my goals. I ran all through the fall and the cold winter. I slowed down in February and then again in April due to work, a death in the family, and my kids constantly being sick. I wrote about that on my other blog too. But I have gotten into my groove and have been running a lot during May and June. Before, I was trying to work up to a half marathon. I wanted to reach that goal so badly because it sounds so big. In the meantime, though, I started to get injured. I would run three days a week or else I would hurt more. I could not run consecutive days without a rest day. My knees hurt. My ankle hurt. My shins hurt. ...
