Robinson Runs

I feel like I need to change this blog to Robinson Runs since the boys are running now too. That expands the running to all of us since Chris is of course always running and never taking time off.

This past fall, Chris thought he'd see how far Eliot could run and they ran a mile together. Eliot was only five at the time, and I was super impressed! He believe he ran in about 11 minutes. He continued to train a little in preparation for a kids' mile run at the Neptune Festival. He did great and won third place boy against some much older kids. He got called up on stage to receive a plague, which was really exciting. It was a hot, muggy day, and I did only mediocre in the 5k, so I was really proud of him. A few weeks ago, he ran a kids' 1k race at ODU. I'm not sure of his placement, but he made great time! This spring, I signed him up for the Healthy Kids Running Series. He would run every Sunday for five weeks in a quarter-mile race. He ran each week in about two minutes or less. He was running against other kindergarteners and first graders and usually came in second or third place boy. Each week, you earn points on your placement and the other two fast boys each missed a week, which meant that Eliot ended up with the most points at the end of the series. He walked away with a first-place trophy and asked to do it again next year.

Jack also has been running, but on a much smaller scale since he is just three. He also ran the 1k and I was surprised that he managed to run the entire time despite being such a little guy. One kilometer is 3/5 of a mile, so that seemed like a lot to me. He also ran in the Healthy Kids Running Series against other three-year-olds. He just did a 50 yard dash, but he earned his finishers medal and had a great time.

At the Neptune Festival 5k, I did not make a great time, but I honestly was just happy to finish it. I had spent the first half of the summer training and working hard. Then I sprained my ankle in early July very, very badly. I had to rest for six weeks. In September, I was so thankful to be back running again. A little too excited. On my "rest" days, I started doing weights and squats. I pushed it way too far on a recovering ankle sprain. My shins were pushed to the limit. Every step I took was so painful. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to run the whole race, but I wanted to just get it in and then rest up. I think I ran it in about 35 minutes, which actually was better than a previous 5k in the summer (it was so hot!). Chris actually won the race and I was so happy for him, Eliot, and Chris's sister (Elizabeth) for also making great time.

I rested up some and managed to keep running through December. And then something happened in December that I didn't see coming. I've always had migraines, but in December, they got much, much worse. I ended up getting migraines five days a week. Migraines come from constricted blood flow, so if I tried to exercise with a migraine, it would grow much worse. I don't mean a simple headache. When I got migraines, I would end up in bed all day with awful pain. I would throw up from the pain and missed work some days because it was so bad. In March, I went to the doctor. My migraines were holding me back from so much in life. Thankfully, I found a great treatment option with just some blood pressure medication for prevention. It is a small dosage because I don't have high blood pressure, but it has made a big difference. So, I have been running consistently since mid-March. I ran five miles yesterday and am training for a 10k race in a couple of weeks.
